Via dei Crociferi, a few steps from Piazza dei Crociferi where the church of S. Maria in Trivio is located, takes its name from the religious nurses used by S. Camillo de Lellis in 1584 for the assistance to the sick. They used to carry a wooden cross, which was later replaced by a red cloth sewn onto the uniform they used to wear. Via dei Crociferi is located in the Trevi neighbourhood, which borders with Sallustiano, Castro Pretorio, Campo Marzio, Campitelli, Pigna, Ludovisi, Colonna, Monti and Sant'Angelo district. Today the heart of this District is the Trevi Fountain with its legend that if you want to return to Rome you have to throw a coin in the fountain.
At the center of the square Barberini stands the Tritone Fountain, done by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1643 and commissioned by Pope Urban VIII Barberini. It is in travertine marble and presents, between the tails of four dolphin, two Barberini coat of arms.
A visit to Via Veneto can not be missed, with its beautiful memories that thanks to Federico Fellini's film La Dolce Vita (1960) remain as an historical memory of a time that will always be related to this avenue.
On the way you can visit the ancient ossuary of the Capuchin Friars at the Church of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, or you can stop and go shopping among many trendy shops or have a coffee in the famous cafes of Via Veneto or stop by the Hard Rock Cafè.
