The apartment is located in the Oltrarno district of Florence’s historic city. The name “Oltrarno” literally means “beyond the Arno” and this district which stretches along the south bank of the river is quite different than the area near the Duomo. The Oltrarno perhaps displays the true character of Florence and in general is slightly quieter, greener, and more relaxed than the other districts of Florence. Indeed many tourists tend to choose the Oltrarno for this reason. Traditionally an artisans’ quarter, the Oltrarno still boasts today many lovely antique shops and artisans’ studios (particularly furniture and leather-workers) and Via Maggio remains the center of Florence’s thriving antiques trade.
Over time the Oltrarno became a rather chic area and many aristocrats chose this neighbourhood to build their villas and palaces, the largest of these being the Pitti Palace, which became the home of various Grand Dukes.
Today this sumptuous palace houses several important museums which rank amongst the best in Florence. Other major sights the Oltrarno has to offer are the Cappella Brancacci with its fabulous frescoes of Masaccio, Piazzale Michelangelo with its breath-taking views over Florence, the magnificent church of San Miniato, (one of the highest points in the city of Florence and also one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany) together with the most famous and oldest bridge in Florence, the Ponte Vecchio, home to a glittering array of jewellery shops and goldsmiths.
Extending up the hill from the Pitti Palace are the formal Boboli Gardens, an outdoor museum of garden sculptures that includes Roman antiquities as well as 16th and 17th century works.
The Oltrarno is famous for its wine bars such as Olio & Convivium, authentic trattorias serving typical Tuscan cuisine, including Il Santo Bevitore, I 4 Leoni, and Il Magazzino, not to mention the wonderful fresh produce market held every morning in Piazza Santo Spirito. For those choosing an apartment in this area the Oltrarno quarter, it also offers a wide variety of grocery stores, patisseries, bakeries, gift shops, and much more.

  • 5.0/5 A good experience all together.
  • 4.9/5 From our initial inquiry, to asking more questions, to booking, to covering pay and contract arrangements, and finally to arrival and then departure ... the process was both efficient and results-driven. WINDOWS ON ITALY delivered the very highest quality in accommodations within our price requirement and support services. Adelaide Marteil and Adrian Lemasson are travel professionals who have a profound understanding of the needs, preferences, and wants of those who plan a longer stay where the risk is taken out of the equation. Our apartment was "ready to go" upon arrival, clean and organized and with fresh linens. The website pictures of the apartment and surrounding area came alive. No surprises! A WINDOWS ON ITALY attendant was there waiting to welcome us and this same person also paid us a visit at the end of our stay to cover the final details, and assisted us in making car arrangements to get us to the airport in Florence at a very early hour. We plan to return to Florence in January each year, as well as live in other towns in Italy during the high season. WINDOWS ON ITALY will be our choice to connect us with fun and excitement ... and certainty! Grazie! Dale & Kay Falcinelli
