Arezzo

Arezzo peeps out from the top of a hill at the crossroads of 4 valleys.
Its strategic position as a border outpost on Via Cassia has conditioned its history of great success and failures. Not far from Siena and Chianti, Arezzo is the jewel among the less flashy cities of art, but no less important. On the contrary, far from the masses of tourists that rush to the cities of art, this beautiful city holds priceless treasures to enjoy and savor slowly.
Arezzo was an important and powerful Etruscan city as evidenced by the discovery of unique works such as the Chimera (preserved in Florence at the National Archaeological Museum), but it is during the Renaissance that the main architectural and artistic legacies of its most illustrious citizens such as Piero della Francesca and Giorgio Vasari are highlighted.
Piero della Francesca, creator of "The Legend of the True Cross" in the Basilica of San Francesco, is one of the great masterpieces of Italian art, and Giorgio Vasari handled the construction of Piazza Grande, built on a slope in an unusual trapezoidal shape. This square is home to 2 of the main events in Arezzo: the antiques fair every month for the past 50 years and the Saracen Joust twice a year (June and September). The joust is a very popular folk event between 4 knights representing the city’s different districts, showing their ability to strike a mannequin while galloping on horseback.
Piazza Grande was the backdrop for many early scenes of the award winning film "Life is Beautiful" by Roberto Benigni.
From Arezzo you can quickly reach locations such as Cortona and Lake Trasimeno, or move north into the area of the Arno Valley and the Chianti region. The excellent infrastructure and railways allow day trips to Florence and the other main towns in Tuscany.
Take your time and choose to see this extraordinary part of Tuscany staying for short or long term stays in one of our villas in Arezzo’s enchanting countryside.
