Villa Sette Sorelle is located on the island of Salina, one of the seven islands of the Aeolian archipelago, named after Aeolus, God of the Winds.
In the centre of the group are the three largest islands, Vulcano, Lipari and Salina. Filicudi e Alicudi lie to the west, and Panarea and Stromboli to the north. The islands are volcanic (although only Stromboli and Vulcano are active).
Each island has its own character, and each is a paradise for anyone who loves the sea and nature. In high season Panarea is famous for its nightlife, but all the islands have some kind of nightlife in the summer, ranging from the laidback beachside bars of Salina and Filicudi to the sophisticated clubs of Stromboli and Panarea.
Salina, formed of two (from a distance, identical) volcanic peaks separated by a fertile valley, was knows as Didyme (the twins) to the Greeks. It not only offers pristine waters, but splendid mountain scenery as well, with a range of footpaths to suit anyone from committed trekkers to afternoon strollers.
The lower slopes of the mountains are mostly given over to vineyards producing Malvasia, an internationally recognised dessert wine.
The island is also famous for its capers, collected daily during spring and summer from carefully tended bushes.
We suggest to see: Santa Marina is the main port (from which local buses run all over the island); the villages of Malfa and Leni; the beach of Pollara (where the movie "Il Postino" was filmed) and the smaller port of Rinella (with a black sandy beach).
