Area
The apartment is located within Duomo district in Florence’s historic city centre. The Duomo area constitutes the very heart of Florence and the area takes its name from Brunelleschi’s magnificent dome on the wonderful Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral. The Duomo neighbourhood offers an array of beautiful historical buildings and superb piazzas including the Mercato di San Lorenzo, the Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Repubblica, famous for its attractive cafes, patisserie shops, live music, street performers and caricature artists. Furthermore, the area is surrounded by the city’s main cultural attractions, notably Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio, the Bargello Palace and Casa Buonarroti, the former home of Michelangelo, not to mention the Uffizi Gallery and the museum dedicated to the city’s cathedral “Museo dell'Opera del Duomo”.
The area also has much to offer in terms of fine dining and exclusive boutique shopping. The top Italian fashion houses are located along Via Tornabuoni, Via Calzaiuoli and Via del Corso and include the famous names of Salvatore Ferragamo, Armani, Versace, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Tiffany & Co. and many more. For those choosing an apartment in this area, the Duomo quarter also offers several food stores otherwise known as “alimentari”, supermarkets, laundrettes and individual gift shops as well as being adequately served by the local public transport service.

Parking
Florence city centre is a ZTL zone which means a “limited traffic zone” and therefore special rules apply to when you can enter this area. This particular apartment is in fact located within the ZTL zone so this means that if you are thinking of coming to Florence by car and wish to drive around and park, then you will need to pay special attention to the road signs, CCTV cameras and access cameras (they will show either a red /green light) in order to avoid receiving fines. Guests who need to travel within the ZTL zone by car to reach their apartment are advised to contact one of the private garages in the centre (the one nearest the apartment you are staying in) and obtain a temporary access permit. Upon arrival at the garage, guests must specify their need for access in the ZTL and the garage will then note the vehicle’s number plate and forward it to the appropriate police headquarters.

Reviews

  • 4.0/5 We stayed at the Ulisse apartment for 6 nights. There were 5 of us: 2 adults and 3 older kids. The positives are that the apartment is quite big, has 3 modern bathrooms and was very clean when we arrived. It is well equipped with all that you need to stay comfortably. There is air conditioning in all the bedrooms. It is cool and there is no noise from the street because it is recessed at the back of a building on the first floor. Via dei Fossi is a busy street but we never heard it. There was plenty of hot water in the bathrooms for showering. The bedding linens were also good quality. We were welcomed the representative from Windows on Italy who was very friendly and helpful. The reservation process was very easy and professional too. The slight negatives are that the entrance and living room are fairly dark. In general there is not much natural light but there is a light motion sensor in the hallway that lights up which is good when you approach the rooms. When it rained, the apartment smelled like sewers. The rest of city smelled like that too, it could be a city problem and I guess we were just unlucky. We did however feel comfortable there and we ended up having a nice trip. The location is convenient. It is a 5 minute walk from the SMN train station and 2 minutes from the Santa Maria Novella Cathedral. However, if I had to pick again, a favorite of ours would be closer to Piazza Del Republica.
  • 4.3/5 Ulisse was a great size. 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, clean, and the kitchen was supplied with basically every item needed to cook. It was located in a great neighborhood within about 10-15 minutes walking to the major museums. Very close to the arno River. Now that we are familiar with the layout of Firenze, we all decided we would choose an apartment a little closer to the Uffizi next time. Due to the configuration of the apartment it was somewhat dark, even though it had two terraces. Because the terraces were on the ground floor and surrounded by walls, very little light came through the terrace windows. However, the agency was good to work with and we would go back to them for another apartment, but with more specific requirements.
