Tintoretto is the best solution for anyone looking for a romantic apartment in the centre of Florence. With original frescoes dating back to the 16th Century and located on Via dei Serragli on the Oltrarno, you will find this one bedroom apartment a real gem.

Tintoretto is a three storey apartment of about 60 m². It has two entrances: one from the 1st floor which leads onto the ground floor of the apartment where you will find the double bedroom with original 16th century frescoed walls, and one from the 2nd floor which leads onto the upper floor of the apartment where you will find the small but well equipped kitchenette, the bathroom with shower, the dining room and finally the living room with a single sofa bed (110 cm wide). A beautiful wooden staircase leads down onto the middle floor where you will find a further sofa. The staircase continues down to the master bedroom. The dining room and living- room have beautiful floors in antique "cotto" as well as coffered ceilings, and the bedroom has warm, wooden parquet floors.

The apartment is located inside Palazzo Medici, an impressive building (palazzo) dating back to the XVI century which represents a typical example of true renaissance Florentine architecture. The palazzo is located in Via dei Serragli, on the characteristic Oltrarno side of Florence just a stone’s throw from the city’s main monuments and tourist attractions.
Palazzo Medici is now home to 8 elegant apartments thanks to a recent restoration programme which has skilfully combined modern comforts and luxury furnishings maintaining the building’s original historical features which include beautiful serena stone columns, magnificent frescoes and coffered wooden ceilings. The building also boasts a grand, triangular-shaped glass elevator which connects the 8 apartments spread over 3 floors, and there is a covered loggia on the third floor which belongs to the Buonarroti apartment. Each of the apartments has its own real unique and enchanting atmosphere that will take you back in time without comprising on comfort and practicality. Palazzo Medici is ideal for large groups or families who wish to visit Florence and stay together in one building by combining two or more apartments.

Area
The apartment is located in the Oltrarno district in Florence’s historic city. The name “Oltrarno” literally means “beyond the Arno” and this district which stretches along the south bank of the river represents a different facet of Florence to that which is found near the Duomo. The Oltrarno perhaps displays the true character of Florence and in general is slightly quieter, greener and more relaxed than the other districts of Florence. Indeed many tourists tend to choose the Oltrarno for this reason. Traditionally an artisans’ quarter, the Oltrarno still boasts today many lovely antique shops and artisans’ studios (particularly furniture and leather-workers) and Via Maggio remains the focus of Florence’s thriving antiques trade.
Over time the Oltrarno became a rather chic area and many aristocrats chose this neighbourhood to build their villas and palaces, the largest of these being the Pitti Palace, which became the home of the various Grand Dukes. Today this sumptuous palace houses several important museums which rank amongst the best in Florence. Other major sights the Oltrarno has to offer are the Cappella Brancacci with the fabulous frescoes of Masaccio, Piazzale Michelangelo with its breath-taking views over Florence, the magnificent church of San Miniato, (one of the highest points in the city of Florence and also one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture within Tuscany) together with the most famous and oldest bridge in Florence, Ponte Vecchio, home to a glittering array of jewellery shops and goldsmiths.
Extending up the hill from the Pitti Palace are the formal Boboli Gardens, an outdoor museum of garden sculpture that includes Roman antiquities as well as 16th and 17th century works. The Oltrarno is famous for its wine bars such as Olio & Convivium, authentic trattorias serving typical Tuscan cuisine, including Il Santo Bevitore, I 4 Leoni and Il Magazzino, not to mention the wonderful fresh produce market held every morning in Piazza Santo Spirito. For those choosing an apartment in this area the Oltrarno quarter also offers a choice of grocery stores, patisserie, bakeries, gift shops and much more.

Parking
Florence city centre is a ZTL zone which means a “limited traffic zone” and therefore special rules apply to when you can enter this area. This particular apartment is in fact located within the ZTL zone so this means that if you are thinking of coming to Florence by car and wish to drive around and park, then you will need to pay special attention to the road signs, CCTV cameras and access cameras (they will show either a red/green light) in order to avoid receiving fines. Guests who need to travel within the ZTL zone by car to reach their apartment are advised to contact one of the private garages in the centre (the one nearest the apartment you are staying in) and obtain a temporary access permit. Upon arrival at the garage, guests must specify they need access for the ZTL and the garage will then note the vehicle’s number plate and forward it to the appropriate police headquarters.

Reviews

  • 4.6/5 While the location provides easy access to central Florence sights and museums and to bus service it is also too close to the restaurant/bar across the streets which disgorges patrons in "high spirits" from 11:00 p.m. on who stand on the corner below and talk in happy but loud voices for hours. Motor bike traffic at this corner goes on at all hours and the powering up when the stop light turns green reverberates in the main second floor bedroom. We loved the high ceilings with the frescoes but found the night noisy street, the stairs, and the midget kitchen with one cupboard a real trial and would not rent this Tintoretto apartment again nor recommend it those over fifty or who wanted to cook a lot. Our friends stayed in Carvaggio and in Titian, and their apartments were lovely and without the problems of Tintoretto's. For sound sleepers who are still good on stairs and part goat, Tintoretto would be fine. The personnel we dealt with (Alessandro, Francesca and Sara) couldn't have been more responsive, gracious, and helpful...loved having the rental office in the same building. Great people. Security is fine too. We would rent from Windows on Italy again in an heartbeat but ask more questions about an apartment of interest.
