External description:
This splendid villa is located in a small fortified hamlet of the same name, Poggio al Vento which in turn is situated on a hilltop in the Chianti area at a height of 400 meters a.s.l. Its truly extraordinary position offers guests of the villa an extensive view of one of the most beautiful areas of Tuscany ranging from the fortified monastery of Badia a Passignano, just a few kilometers away, to the hills of the Val di Pesa and San Gimignano, which is possible to see on a clear day.

Internal Description:
Upon entering, you will find yourself in the great hall, once the Vallombrosian monks' refectory of nearby Badia a Passignano, still dining room with large antique table and monumental stone fireplace.
The apartment (240 sqm – 2583 ft) has four large bedrooms: two on the ground floor overlooking the Pesa valley, and two on the top floor overlooking the garden and the valley towards Badia a Passignano. Each bedroom has its own private bathroom decorated with Chianti handmade tiles and modern furnishings.
In one of the bedrooms on the ground floor, the ancient “ritirata” has been reused for constructing the toilet. The “ritirata” is a small space with little stone window and panoramic views of the Chianti area.
The original terracotta floors were used again, where it has been possible; the walls were whitewashed as in medieval houses. A large living room on the first floor offers moments dedicated to read and relax.
The furniture recalls the elegant simplicity of the historical mansions: a few elements, but important, such as antique wrought iron beds or the nineteenth-century dresser with their original mirrors.
Even the kitchen has remained where it was in the past, reconstructed with antique marbles and current furnishings combined with antique furniture.
Next to the house, there is a large garden enclosed by a wall, like a Medieval 'hortus conclusus', offering a stone paved area with a spacious table ideal to eat, and a large lawn dotted with flowers in jars and Impruneta terracotta handmade “conche”.
In the lower garden, beneath the medieval walls of the house, the swimming pool is waiting you for fresh relax and take in the sweeping views of the Chianti hills, from Panzano, Radda, and the countryside with olive groves and vineyards at the foot of the castle.

Please note that the secondary road which leads to the villa is not paved: please keep a low speed with your car, above all with sports cars.

Pets are allowed at extra cost.

More information about Poggio al Vento
The little borgo of the property was gradually abandoned over the years, but has never lost its great charm. Furthermore, it is now getting a new life thanks to the recent restoration work (a couple of families now live in some of the buildings). The villa itself, used to be the residence of the castle’s lord which is accessed by passing under an arch on the crenellated wall and going through the courtyard which is also overlooked by a small Romanesque church (only used a couple of times a year), built in local stone, like the house. The renovation work was carried out under the supervision of the Monuments and Fine Arts Commission of Florence.

The building’s original materials were recovered and perfectly restored and have been used alongside more modern elements (especially in the kitchens and bathrooms): the result is a welcoming environment that recalls the elegant moderation of historical residences, with traditional antique Tuscan furniture and impeccable details provided by the best local craftsmen. The bedrooms and kitchen offer splendid views over the Chianti countryside.

Reviews

  • 5.0/5 We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, it had all the amenities promised (also if air conditioning is missing and that's really necessary during summer). We did not feel cramped like some other vacation homes. The bedrooms were spacious although we spend most of our time by the pool of course. We definitely will be back and finish visiting Tuscany...still have to find the time to achieve this dream of mine!
  • 5.0/5 Little did we know that we would be staying in a historic castle nestled in the Tuscany hillsides when we booked this villa! The villa was newly remodeled and updated with all the modern conveniences you could want while holding onto to its historic charm. The owner is a delight and so knowledgeable of the villa's rich history. The only challenge was the drive up to the villa, but well worth it!
