The ‘Vertical Forest’ (Bosco Verticale)
The 'Vertical Forest' is the beating heart of the urban renewal of the historic district Porta Nuova, the biggest construction field in Europe ahead of Milan Expo 2015.
The project includes two residential towers of 110 meters (the Tower E, 27-storey) and 76 meters (Tower D, 18-storey) respectively, designed by the architecture firm Boeri (by the architects Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra).
The buildings are located between Via Confalonieri and Via de Castillia.
The ‘Vertical Forest’ was awarded the 'LEED Gold' (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the highest level of energy certification, and it is home to more than 1,000 trees, shrubs and flower plants, offering a brilliant experiment of environmental sustainability. Moreover, this system allows to produce oxygen and contributes reducing the air pollution.
The building uses the latest technologies, such as: exploitation of renewable energy (including geothermal heating and 500 sq.mt of solar panels), thermal insulation, biodegradable and sustainable materials, rainwater collection for the irrigation of public areas.
The peculiarity of the ‘Vertical Forest’ has attracted journalists from around the world: the famous British TV channel BBC has scheduled a monthly service to monitor the evolution of the cohabitation between the skyscraper and its inhabitants.
The large pedestrian area of Porta Nuova of approximately 160.000 sq.mt, to which the ‘Vertical Forest’ belongs, includes the Porta Nuova Gardens, the De Castillia Garden in the Isola district, Piazza Gae Aulenti -designed by the Argentine architect Cesar Pelli-, the Garibaldi footpaths and the walkway between Via Melchiorre Gioia and the Varesine district.
-Surveillance system in the lobby (CCTV)
-License plate reader system in the garage

-November 19, 2014: the ‘Vertical Forest’ won the International Highrise Award, a biennial international competition awarding the most beautiful skyscraper in the world. It is sponsored by the Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt. The Italian skyscraper was chosen among other 800 skyscrapers, including "De Rotterdam" in Rotterdam, "One Central Park" in Sydney, "Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel" in Barcelona and 'Sliced Porosity Block "in Chengdu.
The ‘Vertical Forest’ is located in the ultra-modern district of Porta Nuova, the beating heart of the new Milan, between Piazza Città di Lombardia -home to the futuristic building of the Lombardy regional government- and Porta Garibaldi railway station.
All around, you find some of the most important buildings of the riqualification project, such as the Unicredit Tower -the tallest Italian skyscraper- Piazza Gae Aulenti, located 6 meters above the street level and scenery of key events of Milan fashion and culture, and the Diamond Tower.
The area has also been chosen by Google as its Italian headquarters (at the Zigghurat or Pyramid building designed by the architect William McDonough).
